Guidance: Put into Perspective from Surah Al-An’aam

The dawah last Sunday was eye-opening and after the conversations we had with the general public, I was reminded of how guidance is only in the hands of Allah and no matter how long you talk to someone for and how convinced they seem to be, the shahaadah will only come off their tongue, if Allah wants guidance for them. And only He Subhaanahu wa ta’ala can open their hearts to guidance or blind them from it.

Blog

These  included a non-Muslim mother coming to the dawah table to get a copy of the English Qur’aan because she knew her son was interested in islam. She even said that because it’s his birthday next week, this would be the perfect present for him. And continued to say that she will encourage him to come speak to us the next week so that he gets all his questions answered and so that he gets the right info from the right sources. Allahuakbar! And then another elderly man came past to grab a Qur’aan because he had lost the one he got in 1994 due to a car accident he was in. SubhaanAllah how Allah guided him to get another one after 21 years! Possibly the most amazing thing I’ve seen.
There are even times where a child will come to get a Quraan because they see the “Free Quraan” sign but then they hesitate because their parent is watching. And it’s always reassuring when the parent explains to the child what it is and gives them that choice to take one. And you stand there watching this and just making duaa that this moment waters the seed of faith in the child and the family become Muslim through them.

May Allah open their hearts to Islam Ameen.

This reminds me of three powerful verses in Surah Al-An’aam.

Allah says:

(125. And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam; and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky. Thus Allah puts the wrath on those who believe not.)

(126. And this is the path of your Lord leading straight. We have detailed Our Ayat for a people who take heed.) (127. For them will be the abode of peace with their Lord. And He will be their Wali because of what they used to do.)

In the tafseer of Ibn Kathir, he mentions that in these ayaat Allah makes Islam easy for the one whom He wishes to guide, and strengthens his resolve to embrace it and these are good signs, as Allah has said in another ayah:

﴿أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلإِسْلَـمِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ﴾

(Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is a non-Muslim)) ﴿39:22

and,

(But Allah has endeared the faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience hated by you. Such are they who are the rightly guided.) ﴿49:7

These ayaat should make us contemplate and give thanks to Allah for the blessing of guidance. Sadly we underestimate the blessing of Islam and see it as something inherited rather than gifted. May Allah forgive us for such ignorance Ameen.

Ibn Abbas commented on the verse 125 and said

“Allah says that He will open his heart to Tawheed and faith in Him”

And when Allah wills to send someone astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, referring to the inability to accept guidance due to the heaviness of faith upon him and thus depriving them of beneficial faith. Sa’id bin Jubayr commented that in this case,

“Islam finds every path in his heart impassable”

And Ibn A’bbas said:

“Just as the Son of Adan cannot climb up to the sky, Tawheed and faith will not be able to enter his heart, until Allah decides to allow it into his heart.”

Imam Abu Ja’far  commented:

“This parable that Allah has given for the heart of the disbeliever, which is completely impassable and closed to faith. Allah says, the example of the disbelievers inability to accept faith in his heart and that it is too small to accommodate it, is the example of his inability to climb up to the sky, which is beyond his capability and power. ” He also commented on Allah’s statement,

“Thus Allah puts the Rijs (wrath) on those who believe not.”

Allah says that just as He makes the heart of whomever He decides to misguide, closed and constricted, He also appoints Shaytaan for him and for his like, those who refused to believe in Allah and His messenger. Consequently, Shaytaan lures and hinders them from the path of Allah.

After Allah mentioned the way of those who were themselves led to stray from His path and who hindered others from it, He emphasized the honor of the guidance and religion of truth that He sent His Messenger with. Allah said next,

“And this is the path of your Lord leading straight.”

Here He is referring to Islam, that He has legislated for Muhammad, by revealing this Qur’an to him. This is Allah’s straight path.

And the Ayat have been made clear and plain, for those who have sound comprehension and understand what Allah and His Messenger convey to them. “For them will be the abode of peace” (referring to Paradise), (with their Lord.) on the Day of Resurrection. Allah described Paradise as `the abode of peace’, because its residents are safe due to their access to the straight path, which conforms to the way of the Prophets. And just as their way was not wicked, they earned the abode of peace ﴿which is free from all wickedness. and He will be their Protector, Supporter and Helper. As reward for their good deeds, Allah has favored them and been generous with them, and awarded them Paradise.

May Allah gather us in the highest level of Jannah and grant us the ability to praise Him, thank Him and worship Him in the best of Manners. We ask Allah to make us amongst the Saliheen and allow us to realise the blessing of Islam, take hold of it and be of the saabiqoon lil-khayraat, before we are replaced by people who are better than us Ameen.

And Allah knows best
